Professionalism Flashcards
Prioritization
Physiological FIRST!
ABCs
How to assess the top priority(airway)
-ask person to tell you name
-ask how they’re feeling
-if unconscious look for rise/fall of chest
Interventions for facilitating airway clearance
-head tilt chin lift
-jaw thrust if spinal injury suspected
-after open airway, take pulse ox apply oxygen as needed
How can you assess circulation?
feel for carotid or femoral, check for bleeding
-rapid pulse could indicate blood loss
Types of Bleeding
-blood from arteries is bright red, gushes in spurts
-blood from severed vein, leaks slow, dark red
Treatment for fractured ribs
-turn pt on affected side, to splint and reduce pain
-observe for signs of internal/external bleeding, shock
Symptoms of hemothorax/pneumothorax
-shallow respirations
-lack of movement on one side, on inhale and exhale
-chest pain
Interventions for abdominal trauma
-external wounds w/evisceration temp. covered with aluminum foil
-clean folded towel placed over that to facilitate heat
-do not put organs back in wound
Blunt trauma monitoring
-monitor for sx of shock
-abdominal assessments
-look for bluish tinge around umbilicus indicative of hemmorhage (Cullen’s sign)
-ecchymosis along flank(retroperitoneal hemmorhage)
Multiple trauma signs to watch for
-at risk for hypovolemic shock
-tension pneumothorax can lead to shock
