How to interpret Specific Gravity?

A

-low levels indicate that the patient is taking in a lot of fluids, could also be from diabetes insipidus, diuretic use
-high levels show dehyrdation from diabetes mellitus, DKA, vomiting, etc

How do I determine BUN levels?

A

-if elevated, pt is dehydrated, heart disease, high protein diet
-if elevated, monitor for seizures, disorientation
-normal range: 7-20mg/dL

-clean with swabs front to back
