Common substances to monitor for kidney function
-urea
-total urine protein
-creatinine
-uric acid levels
-catecholamines
What causes lowering of these levels?
alcohol, glomerulonephritis
How to collect a 24-hour urine specimen?
-discard first void
-note time at beginning of collection
-next 24 hrs, collect and place in opaque container
-stored on ice
How to interpret Specific Gravity?
-low levels indicate that the patient is taking in a lot of fluids, could also be from diabetes insipidus, diuretic use
-high levels show dehyrdation from diabetes mellitus, DKA, vomiting, etc
How do I determine BUN levels?
-if elevated, pt is dehydrated, heart disease, high protein diet
-if elevated, monitor for seizures, disorientation
-normal range: 7-20mg/dL
How to obtain a Clean-Catch specimen?
Female:
-remove lid don’t touch inside of container
-place lid upside down on counter
-sit on toilet
-clean with swabs front to back
-collect 1 oz

How do I determine Postvoid Residual Volume?
-ultrasound device
-catheterization
-less than 50 ml should remain unless older adults who may have 100ml
