- Principles of Ethics (the aspirational goals of the profession)
- Code of Professional Conduct (an expression of specific types of conduct that are required or prohibited)
- Advisory Opinions (interpretations that apply the code of professional conduct to specific fact situations)
What are the 5 fundamental principles of the ADA code of conduct ?
Pt autonomy (dentist must respect the pt right to self determination and confidentiality)
Non maleficence (dentist has a duty to refrain from harming the pt)
Beneficence (dentist has the duty to promote the pt welfare)
Justice (dentist has a duty to treat people fairly)
Veracity (dentist has a duty to communicate truthfully)
Principles can overlap each other or compete with each other, just depends on the situation

What is overbilling?
Over billing is when dentists report higher Pt charges than what’s accurate just so that they can receive higher reimbursement rates
What’s considered a dentists full fee?
A dentists full fee is a fee for pt without dental benefits

1839- the year of the founding of the American Journal of Dental Science to disseminate correct principles and expose error (1st ADA code of ethics book)
1840- 1st dental school, Baltimore college of dental surgery was created, the 1st professional dentistry association (American society of dental surgeons) was created
