Paternalism And Pt Autonomy Flashcards
What’s the dilemma between moral sainthood and moral philosophy?
A person can be perfectly wonderful without being perfectly moral (be a saint)
What’s the point of individual perfection?
It’s the point of view where we consider what kinds of lives are good lives and what kinds of lives aren’t good lives
What role does morality play in the development of our individual character traits?
There can’t be a universal medium where all of our values have to pass through. Our values can’t be fully comprehended on a hierarchy like system where morality is at the top.
What’s the typical moral roles of healthcare provider and pt?
The healthcare provider has a duty of beneficence over the pt, the pt has a right to pt autonomy and he has to right to the skilled beneficence that the provider provides
What’s autonomy ?
Autonomy is a persons rational capacity for self governance or self determination . Autonomy violations could range from physically restraining someone to not informing them fully of their illness .
What’s weak paternalism? What’s strong paternalism?
Weak paternalism is paternalism directed at pt who can’t act autonomously (severely retarded people). Weak paternalism is morally acceptable generally.
Strong paternalism is overriding a pt actions/choices although though they’re substantially conscience.
When do autonomy and beneficence collide in a healthcare setting?
They collide when a pt refuses tx that the dr recommends to benefit them
What’s physician autonomy ?
It’s the freedom of doctors to determine the conditions they work in and the care they give to patients
What’s an advance directive?
An advanced directive is a legal document that speaks for you if you’re incapacitated
What’s futile care concerned with?
It’s concerned with it or wanting tx that a healthcare provider doesn’t want to provide in order to maintain beneficence among that pt.
Medical futility- the alleged pointlessness of administering particular treatments
