Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation
Found in 1967, voluntary consensus organization.
Research and develop new or revise recommended practices and standards that address the use, care, and processing of devices and systems.
Develop standards for manufacturers which recommend the labeling, safety, and performance requirements for products produced.
ANSI
American National Standards Institute
Found in 1918, does not develop American standards–it provides a neutral arena for interested parties to work toward agreement.
AORN
Association of Operating Room Nurses
Develop nationally recognized standards, recommended practices, and guidelines.
Not a regulatory agency.
APIC
The Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology
Voluntary international organizations goes members are dedicated to the prevention and control of infections and related outcomes.
Work in conjunction with other agencies to adopt standards for infection/disease prevention
ISO
International Standards Organization
Non-governmental, standards are voluntary
The Joint Commission
Private, independent, non-profit organization that develops standards for health care facilities.
Conduct on-site surveys at least every 3 years. Unnannounced surveys lasting 2-5 days studying virtually every aspect of a facility.
Standards are voluntary, however, failure to participate can result in loss of accreditation by federal and state governments. That in turn results in the forfeiture of millions of dollars in Medicare and Medicaid program payments.
NFPA
National Fire Protection Association
International organization, use a consensus process to develop codes and standards that influence building safety.
USP-NF
United States Pharmacopoeia-National Formulary
Creates and revises standards for medicines, dosages, forms, drug substances, and dietary supplements.
Standards are set for packaging, labeling, bacteriological purity, pH, and mineral content.
Important to Techs working with purified water or sterilizing water for irrigation
WHO
World Health Organization
Agency of United Nations-Major task is to combat disease, especially key infectious diseases, and to promote general health.
Monitor outbreaks of infectious diseases
ECHN
European Commission for Standardization
Sets the health care standards for Europe in much the same way that AAMI sets standards for the US.
SGNA
Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates
Non-profit organization, collects information and establishes standards and guidelines relating to processing of flexible endoscopes.
