Productivity in Lakes Flashcards
What is productivity related to?
The amounts of C:N:P
Oligotrophic systems
Nutrient poor, low in biodiversity.
Eutrophic systems
Nutrient rich, high in biodiversity.
Mesotrohic systems
Have moderate productivity.
Hypertrophic/hypereutrophic systems
Excessively productive.
Dystrophic systems
Canadian Shield lakes in which water is stained brown with dissolved and colloidal humus materials; low in calcium; acidic.
Autotrophic lakes
organic compounds produced are from photosynthesis rather than imported from outside lake; rate of inorganic carbon fixation by primary producers related to trophic status
* Oligotrophic: 7-25 g C/m2/yr
* Naturally Eutrophic: 75-250 g C/m2/yr
* Mesotrophic: 25-75 g C/m2/yr
* Polluted waters: 350-700 g C/m2/yr
