Limnology Flashcards
Define
Limnology
A multidisciplinary approach to the study of all inland
water communities and their interactions with physical,
chemical and biological environments.
What kinds of waterbodies are included? (6)
Running water, standing water, fresh water, saline, natural, and man made.
What is the difference between lotic and lentic systems.
Lotic: flowing water (stream, river)
Lentic: still/standing water (lake, pond)
Characteristics of lakes
-lentic
-large, inland waterbody
-greater than 1-10 ha
-greater than 3 m deep
Characteristics of ponds
-lentic
-relatively small body of water
-less than 10 ha
-less than 3 m deep
Characteristics of rivers
-lotic
-flows into lake, ocean, sea or other river
Characteristics of streams
-lotic
-smaller than rivers
-can be intermittent
Characteristics of wetlands
-soil saturated with water
-less than 1 m deep
Where is earths freshwater?
From most to least abundant.
-glaciers, permafrost, and permanent snow (~70%)
-groundwater
-lakes and marshlands
-rivers
Steps of the Hydrological Cycle. (10)
(shows the movement of water)
Precipitation, snowmelt/runoff, surface runoff, infiltration, ground water flow, plant uptake, evaporation, transpiration, condensation, & transport.
