Lake Regions Flashcards
Littoral zone
shallow region next to shore where light penetrates to bottom; rooted macrophytes; subject to waves, ice grinding, temperature fluctuations, coarse sediments
Sublittoral zone
extends lakeward from littoral; finer sediments; less biodiversity due to fewer niches
Profundal zone
deep, dark, cold region
Pelagic zone
open water region; dominated by phytoplankton
Trophogenic zone
upper region of lake with sufficient light for photosynthesis to occur; primary producers fix organic carbon and make organic compounds (also called euphotic zone)
Tropholytic zone
deeper water where light is insufficient for photosynthesis; respiration and decomposition predominate (also called aphotic zone)
