Dramaturg

A
  • Dramaturgist assist the director and other creation team members to stage a script with contextual accuracy, artistic harmony and effective performance.
  • Role of dramaturg is to question everything (legit everything).
  • Role of the dramaturg in existing works is to question why certain things are said/done in the play, and why things have been done in the past. They research what the characters wear, how they talk and communicate, the relationships between characters, and interpret this to accurately reflect the society in which the play is set.
  • Dramaturgy = questioning and context.
  • Dramaturg’s share information and debate ideas with directors and designers, plus peace keeper.
  • This means finding out as much as they can about the historical, political, environmental, socio-economic and cultural landscape.
  • Dramaturg consider how their research will effect acting and design choices.

Dramaturgical process

A
  1. Speak with director and other designers
  2. Read scripts to identify clues to find out as much as they can about the historical, political, environmental, socio-economic and cultural landscape. To work out what props to use, the subtext in characters dialogue.
  3. Research & investigation. Talking to people, internet research, book research, historical investigation.
  4. Rehearsals: identify effectiveness of research and see what else needs to be researched.
  5. Sharing information: discuss research with director and creative team, present research in a written report

Costume Design process

A
  1. Costume designer (CD) meets with the rest of the design team after reading the play
  2. Everyone agrees on the creative vision
  3. CD looks for script clues
  4. CD conciders the practicality of costume, and the context of the play
  5. CD records initial thoughts about the process
  6. CD researches historical, political, economic, social, cultural and environmental landscape of the inner world of the play
  7. CD experiments and drafts costume
  8. CD seeks feedback on initial designs
  9. CD creates design documentation
  10. Design is finalised and designs are painted up with full length views of the back and the front with attached sample fabric
  11. The tailor creates the costumes
