Production processes Flashcards
What are the 3 types of production processes?
- Job production
- batch production
- flow production
What is job production?
Job production is when the business produces products individually to meet specific needs of customers
Give an example of job production
Bakery that make cakes according to customers order
What is batch production?
Batch production is where different types of products are made in batches
Give an example of batch production
loaves of bread
What is flow production?
Flow production is where a type of product is made on an assembly line
What is flow production also known as ?
Mass production
Give an example of flow production?
Drink company e.g. Coca-Cola
What are the 2 advantages of job production?
- made of high quality
- sold at a higher price = more profit
What are the 2 disadvantages of job production?
- highly costed method since you would need
skilled workers - production can be slow
What are the 3 advantages of batch production?
- cheaper than job production
- Batches are varied to meet the needs of
different customers - There are no storage costs if goods are
made to order
What are the 3 drawbacks to batch production?
- Machines need resetting
- tasks are repetitive for workers = lowers staff
motivation and retention - stocks of raw materials may be needed =
costly
What are the 4 advantages of flow production?
- Large quantities are produced for sale
- use of machinery can reduce costs
- use of computer controlled machinery allows
some variation in the product - The business may gain economies of large-
scale which may reduce unit costs
What are the disadvantages of flow production?
- if machinery breaks down, production could
be disrupted - Mass-produced goods may not be of high
quality - business would need to stock materials
ready to use = storage cost - repetitive tasks = lowers staff motivation and
retention
What are the 3 types of technology used in production?
- computer
- robotics
- automation
