Producing Electricity Flashcards
What is a direct current
It is when the electric current only flows in one direction
What produces a direct current
Cells, batteries and solar panels
What is an alternative current
It is when an electric current moves one way and then the other way, changing direction repeatedly
How can the size of a current be increased
Adding more turns to the coil wire or moving the magnet faster around it
What is a dynamo
It rotates a magnet in a coil of wire to induce an electrical current in a circuit
How do you induce a current in a circuit
Move a magnet in and out of a coil wire
What is a generator
A generator is something which makes electricity on a large scale. It is a device which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy
Examples of this is a wind turbine, wave turbine and a hydroelectric turbine
What is non - renewable energy
A resource that can not be replaced when it is used up e.g. Oil, coil or natural gas
What is renewable energy
A resource that will never run out and it is replenished and not exhausted e.g. Solar power
What is a greenhouse gas
It is a gas which is responsible for climate change and global warming. Examples of these gases are methane, carbon dioxide and water vapour
What is a turbine
A revolving machine which is turned by wind, water or steam. Turbines in a power station turn generators
