The universe Flashcards
What are the two excepted theory’s of the universe
The Big Bang and the steady state theory
What is the Big Bang theory
The belief that the universe began from a very small point and expanded rapidly
What is the steady state theory
The belief that the Earth has always existed and that more matter is being created as the universe expands
What is the life cycle of an average star
It begins as a cloud of dust and gas which is pulled together by gravity, this then forms a main sequence star like our sun
It then forms a red giant
White dwarf
Black dwarf
What does a star like our sun produce and how
It produces its own light and heat by nuclear fusion
What is the life cycle of giant star
It begins as a nebula which is a cloud of gas and dust which gets pulled together to for a giant star when all the hydrogen has been turned to helium by nuclear fusion a red super giant is formed, this will then turn in to a supernova which can either then be turned in to a black hole or a neutron star
What is a white dwarf
The remaining of an small mass date like our sun after nuclear fusion has stopped
What is the Doppler effect
It is seen or heard when an object is moving away or towards us
What is red shift and how does it support the Big Bang theory
It is a type of Doppler effect, which is observed when galaxies are moving away from us
Galaxies further from us are moving away from us faster than galaxies close to us and this is evidence that the universe began from a single point
What does cmb stand for and what is it
Cosmic microwave background radiation, which is the energy left over from the Big Bang
Why can’t light escape from a black hole
The gravitational pull is too strong
