Procrastination Flashcards

1
Q

Procrastination’s typical behaviors:

  • They put off things that make them uncomfortable, particularly when they are unsure about how to do them efficaciously. With delays come anxiety, embarrassment, and inflated definitions of success—all in the absence of knowing how to work in a process mode and how to use waiting times to prepare.
  • when there can be no more waiting, actions are impulsively rushed (often binged or else blocked) and failure is risked
  • Finally, the more the exposure to this vicious cycle, the lower the self-esteem and inclination to find new ways of working, the higher the socially prescribed perfectionism and time pressures, the greater the tendency to struggle and block the next time. Test anxieties, dilatory self-care, and their kind may be little more than the result of not having learned the usually tacit skills of efficacy. In this view, efficacy is a teachable, learnable skill (even its first step, of wanting to change)
