Processing Techniques Flashcards
What is metal reforming?
The reshaping of raw metal into a finished part achieved through plastic deformation
What is bending?
A metal sheet being formed by placing it over a die that punch-presses the metal to shape it to the die
What is rolling?
Reducing the thickness of metal and making the thickness uniform by passing metal through rollers
What is hot rolling?
Rolling metal that is heated above its recrystallisation temperature and then cooled at room temperature (normalisation)
What is roll forming?
Shaping metal through rollers, creating desired cross-sectional shapes
What is the difference between hot and cold working?
Hot working is done at temperatures above recrystallisation temperature, whereas cold working is done below this temperature
What is recrystallisation temperature?
The temperature at which deformed grains are replaced by defect-free grains in the metal
What is stretching?
A process where metal is stretched and bent over a die to form complex/large contoured parts
What is deep drawing?
The metal is clamped in place over a bottomless die and is punched through (to form hollow-shaped components)
What is sintering (aka frittage)?
Forming a solid mass of material through heat and pressure without melting to the point of liquefaction
What is powder coating? What are the two types?
Coating a material in a powder that forms a casing thicker than paint
Thermosets and thermoplastics
What are the three subgroups of casting?
Expendable mould
Permanent mould
Composite mould
How does sand casting work?
Molten metal poured into sand mould cavity where it solidifies and takes shape of cavity
What is injection moulding?
Melting plastic pellets and injecting this into a mould cavity, which fills and solidifies
What are some injection moulding materials?
Acrylic
ABS
Polycarbonate (PC)
Polyethyelene (PE)
