Processes of Evolution - Molecular Biology Flashcards
1
Q
Conserved sequence
A
Similar or identical sequences in DNA or RNA or proteins across species, sequences are maintained via natural selection
2
Q
Molecular Clocks
A
Using DNA sequence or protein to determine how closely related two species are by calculated the number of differences in amino acid or base sequence.
3
Q
Mitochondrial DNA
A
Passed down from mother to child - mtDNA is not subject to meiosis so any changes in mtDNA is due to mutation. Can use mtDNA to work out how long ago species diverged
4
Q
Y chromosome
A
Passed from father to child. Changes are due to mutation, can use mtDNA or Y chromosome to determine how long ago species diverged
