Processes of Evolution - Evidence of Evolution Flashcards
Fossil records
Most fossils are found within layers of sedimentary rocks called strata. Deeper strata = older fossils and therefore different time periods can be compared.
Homologous structures
Anatomical features that are derived from a common ancestor - might be adapted for different purposes
Comparative Anatomy
Comparing anatomy of different species supports the notion of a common ancestor. closely related species have more anatomical similarities
Analogous structures
Structural features that serve a common function in various species but have different ancestral origins
vestigial structures
Some animals possess inherited features that are no longer needed i.e whales have remains of hip-bones - signifies whales evolved from a four-legged ancestor
comparing embryology
comparing embryos of animals as they develop - we find more similarities before they are fully developed
