What is Evolution?
Evolution is a change in allele frequency → therefore heritable characteristics of populations over successive generations
What is a population?
A group of organisms of the same species living in a given area at a given time
What is a gene pool?
Gene pool is the sum total of genes (their alleles) present in a population
Describe Allele freqeuncy
allele frequency is the proportion of each allele for a gene within a gene pool
What is gene flow?
When individuals leave or come into a population → contributing or removing alleles
what is immigration?
new individuals introduced into a population → new alleles introduced
what is emigration?
individuals leaving a population → loss of certain alleles
what is a mutation?
A mutation is a permanent change in the base pair sequence of DNA → can lead to the formation of new allele
