Processes In Reading Flashcards

1
Q

Grabe (2009)

Reading is combination of processes

A
Rapid and an efficient process
The rate at which one reads+ efficiency of the processing of skills
-word recognition
- word resonation processing skills
-critical evaluation
- comprehensions skills
- linking background knowledge

Comprehending and interactive process

  • reads to understand
  • all the processes of reading aims to understand a text

All processes interact and work together when reading and understanding
- the knowledge the reader bring and the textual knowledge interact as well

Strategic and flexible process
When reading strategies are used
- anticipate info
- select key ideas
- monitor comprehension
-repair comprehension

Reader adjust purposes of reading according to his/her interest
Ex: one might read scholarly articles to get info
One might do only to complete and assignment

Purposeful and evaluative process
Reads to attain a specific goal
And decides if the goal is achieved and how to respond to the text

Learning and a linguistic process
Constantly evaluates ➡️ learning
Reasonable amount of linguistic knowledge is needed to read
For word recognition

Q

Lower level processing

Word recognition

A

Word recognition
Very important
Builds links between graphics through phonological, morphological, syntactic, semantic and lexical information
Should be rapid and automatized

Orthographical processing
Visually recognizing words as letter, and groups of letters

Phonological processing
Requires phonemic awareness
Happen prior to lexical access
Build links between orthography phonology and meaning

Syntactic and semantic processing
Takes place after word recognition
Much slower
Helps build up comprehension

Morphological processing
Recognition of morphological markers and infusing the knowledge regarding them

Lexical access
Once a word is recognized it automatically activates one’s mental lexicon and generates meaning and all the information related to the word

Q

Lower level processes

A

Essential for comprehension
Recognition of different sentence patterns
Ex- tense aspect modality of sentences help create meaning
The meanings associated with particular tenses
