Processes Flashcards
User Centred Design
User-centred design methods mean placing people, the users, at the centre/heart of any problem.
Inclusive Design
Inclusive design means designing products so as many people as possible can use
Wastage
Wastage is the process of cutting away material with tools and equipment.
Milling
Milling is the machining process of using rotary cutters to remove material.
Welding
Welding is a fabrication or sculptural process that joins materials, usually metals, by melting the work pieces and adding a filler material to form a pool of molten material
Brazing
Brazing is a metal-joining process whereby a filler metal is heated above melting point and distributed between two or more close-fitting parts.
Soldering
Soldering is a process in which two or more metal items are joined together by melting and flowing solder
Bending
Simplest form of forming metal. You can bend with simply a vice and hitting it or in jigs/machines.
Casting
The process involves pouring molten metal into a prepared cavity in a sand mould and allowing it to solidify.
Shearing
A cutting and slicing action
Cutting
There are a great many saws used to cut timber - some suit long straight cuts on thicker planks, and others suit curves and complex shapes:
Turning
Metal Turning - Used to make circular components from metal bars.
Line Bending
A strip heater consists of a hot wire that is used to heat the acrylic to around 160 degrees.
Injection molding
Injection molding is a method to make parts by injecting melted material into a mold, which then cools and hardens to form the final product.
Extrusion
Extrusion is a process where a material is forced through a die to create a continuous shape or profile, like when making pipes or plastic sheets.
Router
Can be used to shape, cut and create designs in wood. Different cutting tools can be used that have different profiles.
Turning
Pieces of timber are rotated and cutting tools are then used to shape the material.
Laminating
Thin strip of wood are glued together in a former.
It is often used to create curved shapes and famously used in furniture design, including Marcel Breuer and Ikea!
Steam Bending
Thicker pieces of timber can be bent if they are steamed first. The steam penetrates the timber fibres and temporarily softens them, allowing them to be formed.
Kerfing
Adding thin saw cuts into a thicker material, you can make it flexible, enabling you to make curved shapes.
