Materials Flashcards
Name some ferrous metals
Cast iron, High carbon steel, Low carbon/mild steel
What are the general properties of ferrous metals?
Magnetic, Hard, but brittle. Contain iron
Name some non ferrous metals
Aluminium, Zinc, Copper, Tin
What are the general properties of non ferrous metals
Non-magnetic, higher resistance to rust, malleable & ductile.
Name some alloys.
High speed steel, stainless steel, brass.
What are the general properties of alloys?
Malleable, hard, resistant & ductile.
What does (PP) stand for?
Polypropylene, thermoforming
What does (HDPE) stand for?
High density polyethylene, thermoforming
What does (HIPS) stand for?
High Impact Polystyrene, thermoforming
What does (PET) stand for?
Polyethylene Terephthalate, thermoforming
What does (PMMA) stand for?
Acrylic, thermoforming
What does (PVC) stand for?
Polyvinyl Chloride, thermoforming
What does (PR) stand for?
Polyester resin, thermosetting
What does (ER) stand for?
Epoxy resin, thermosetting
What does (UF) stand for?
Urea Formaldehyde, thermosetting
What does (PF) stand for?
Phenol formaldehyde, thermosetting
What does (MF) stand for?
Melamine formaldehyde, thermosetting
Define thermoforming
plastics that can be re- heated and therefore shaped in various ways, can be recycled
Define thermosetting
Once ‘set’ these plastics cannot be reheated to soften, shape and mould, can’t be recycled
What are some polymer additives?
Plasticisers, Pigments, Stabilizers, Fillers.
What is a plasticizer?
Plasticizers are substances added to plastics to make them softer and easier to shape.
What is a stabilizer?
Additives used to prevent degradation or deterioration of materials, typically by inhibiting reactions such as oxidation or UV degradation.
What is a filler?
Inert materials added to plastics to improve properties such as strength, stiffness, or density, or to reduce cost by displacing more expensive polymer materials.
What is a stock form?
the standard shapes and sizes in which a material is available
