Process of synaptic transmission Flashcards

Q

Process of synaptic transmission

A
  1. An actional potential arrives at the axon terminal, causing vesicles to merge with the membrane of the presynaptic cell
  2. Releasing neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft
  3. Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft binding to receptors at the post synaptic cell
  4. Summation occurs ( effects of all the excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter influences on the presynaptic cell)
  5. Excitatory neurotransmitters excite the post synaptic cell making it more likely to fire an impulse
  6. Inhibitory neurotransmitters reduce the tendency of the post synaptic neurone to fire, calms the mind
  7. Re uptake then occurs as neurotransmitters are re absorbed into the pre synaptic cell
