Process of synaptic transmission Flashcards

Q
Process of synaptic transmission
A
- An actional potential arrives at the axon terminal, causing vesicles to merge with the membrane of the presynaptic cell
- Releasing neurotransmitters into the synaptic cleft
- Neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft binding to receptors at the post synaptic cell
- Summation occurs ( effects of all the excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitter influences on the presynaptic cell)
- Excitatory neurotransmitters excite the post synaptic cell making it more likely to fire an impulse
- Inhibitory neurotransmitters reduce the tendency of the post synaptic neurone to fire, calms the mind
- Re uptake then occurs as neurotransmitters are re absorbed into the pre synaptic cell
