Nervous system Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Human nervous system
A
complex network of nerve cells that carry messages to and from the brain and spinal cord
2
Q
Human nervous system 2 parts
A
- Central Nervous system (CNS) -made up of the brain and spinal cord
- Peripheral nervous system (PNS) - all the nerves outside of the CNS
3
Q
CNS functions
A
- Control behaviour
- Regulation of body’s psychological processes
4
Q
PNS function
A
relay nerve impulses from the CNS to the rest of the body back to the CNS
5
Q
Divisions of the PNS
A
- Somatic nervous system – controls skeletal muscles for movement, voluntary system (under conscious control)
- Autonomic nervous system – controls internal organs and glands, involuntary system (under conscious control)
6
Q
Autonomic system processes
A
- Sympathetic – increases body activity. Releases noradrenaline. Activates fight or flight response
- Parasympathetic – decreases bodily activities. Rest and digest.
7
Q
Homeostasis
A
Regulation of internal environment, balance between sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
