Process Of Electrolysis Flashcards
What is STEP 1 of electrolysis?
1- we melt the ionic compounds/ dissolve them so that the ions are free to move
What is STEP 2 of electrolysis?
2- if we then insert electrodes connected to a DC power source, the current passes through the molten ionic compound/solution (electrolyte)
compound= when in solid form
solution= when dissolved in water
What is STEP 3 of electrolysis?
3- the ions are attracted to the electrodes
What is STEP 4 of electrolysis?
The ions then GAIN or LOSE electrons at the electrodes becoming ATOMS again
What ions do ANODES attract?
Negative ions (- ions) “anions”
If the - ion is group 7 what is produced at the anode?
The group 7 elements is produced as a gas
What is produced at the anode if the - ions are NOT GROUP 7?
Oxygen is produced
What do CATHODES attract?
Cathodes attract = + ions (cations)
What is produced in the CATHODE if the + ion (metal) is MORE reactive than hydrogen?
- if the + ion is MORE reactive than hydrogen then HYDROGEN is produced
(Potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, zinc iron)
What is produced in the cathode if the + ion is LESS reactive than hydrogen?
If + ions (metals) are LESS reactive than hydrogen then the METAL is produced
(Copper, Gold, silver”
