Metal Carbonates And Acids Flashcards
What are the FIVE STEPS in reacting metal carbonates with acid?
1- add 20 cm cubed of your acid to a 100 cm cubed beaker
2- Add one of the METAL CARBONATES, a spatula at a time until you know the gas is fully neutralised
3- If a gas is given off, collect some using pipette
4- bubble the pipette contents through a test tube of lime water
5- if the lime water changes colour (from clear to cloudy white) then carbon dioxide test is positive
Write the formula for copper carbonate, zinc carbonate and lithium carbonate (3 points)
- copper carbonate= CUCO3
- zinc carbonate= ZnCO3
- lithium carbonate= LI2CO3
What is the formulas for SULFURIC ACID, HYDROCHLORIC ACID AND NITRIC ACID? (3 points)
- Hydrochloric acid= HCL
- SULFURIC Acid= H2SO4
- nitric acid= HNO3
What are the formulas for the salts, COPPER SULFATE, ZINC CHLORIDE AND LITHIUM NITRATE? (3 points)
- copper Sulfate= CUSO4
- zinc chloride= ZnCL2
- lithium nitrate= LiNO3
How do we test for hydrogen gas?
Hold a lit splint to the gas and it will burn with a squeaky pop
How would you know when an acud has been fully neutralised when using a metal carbonate to neutralise it?
When excess carbonate is added to the acid and it no longer bubbles
