Process of Bone Growth Flashcards
What is bone?
Bone is a living organism that is continuously being reshaped by a process called remodelling.
What is ossification?
The process in which bones are formed/bone growth
What are osteoclasts?
Break down and remove old and weakened bone tissue. Removing unnecessary calcium.
Increases in response to elevated calcium concentration within the blood (at rest).
Increases as a response to weightbearing exercise
What are osteoblasts?
Bring calcium to your bones - Calcium absorbed in blood and encourages bone formation.
Responsible for the building and growth of bone tissue in response to stress placed upon the bone.
Weight bearing.
Immature cells that make up bone.
What is an epiphyseal plate?
Growing areas or plates that allow the bone to grow longer and extend.
Located on the ends of each long bone.
What is the epiphyseal line?
Where the head or end of each bone fuses with the main shaft once the bone is fully formed.
Describe the role of blood cells after injury/activity.
- Activity or injury
- Micro damage to bone
- Need for remodelling
- Osteoclasts reabsorb bone matrix
- Need to maintain or increase bone density.
- Osteoblasts increase bone matrix
What is the skeleton like in the first 8 weeks of development?
Cartilaginous
