procedure Flashcards

1.
Seven 25-minute observations (trials) were completed in the outdoor area of the monkey enclolusre at the research center.
2.
Before each observation, the observers positioned a pair of toys (one wheeled, one plush) in the the outdoor area.
The monkeys waited inside while the toys were being placed.
3.
Toys were always placed 10 meters apart and the positions were counter balanced.
Wheeled toys on the right and plush toys on the left for half the trials and the other way round for the others
This ruled out the possibility that monkeys preferred a certain area of the enclosure rather than genuinely preferring the properties of the the toy they found there.
4. Toys
Varied in size, shape and color.
They were selected according to what you could ‘do’ with them rather than simply choosing traditionally male or female toys.

A video camera was focused on teach toy so that all interactions could be recorded for later analysis.
Two observers watched the videos and used a behavioral checklist to code (categorize) every interaction between the monkeys and the toys.
The observers recorded the data using an app called Handobs on palm pilots (digital devices similar to phones).
Start and finish times of each interaction recorded and duration of interaction calculated.
For each interaction, the observers recorded the monkey’s age, rank and sex.

- Unclear behavior
Ambiguous or unclear behavior was discussed until the observers agreed on how to code the interaction.
