Problems With The Circulatory System Flashcards
Describe what corinary heart disease is and what are the effects?
Corrinary heart diesease is the narrowing of an artery because of a build up of fatty material called plaque on the lining of the vessel. The effects can be: supply of oxygen is reduced to heart muscles is reduced causing pain, heart attacks and even death.
What are the cures for corinary heart disease?
- A stent. A stent is a metal mesh that is placed in the artery. A tiny baloon is inflated to open up the blood vessel and the stent at the same time. The ballon is deflated and removed but the stent stays in place holding the blood vessels open.
- The patient can carry out a bypass surgery, replacing the narrow or blocked coronary arteries with bits of veins from other parts of the body. This works in badly blocked arteries where stents cannot help. It is expensive.
- Aspirin can also help, it thins the blood making it easier to go through.
- Statins are medication for anyone at risk from corinary disease. They reduce blood cholesterol levels and this slows down the rate at which fatty material is deposited in the coronary arteries.
List the advantages and dissadvantages of a mechanical heart valves
Advantage - they are durable and long lasting because they are made from materials that are lightweight, strong and durable such as titanium. They will last 20-30 years.
Disadvantage - Because of the materials in the valve, it is likely that blood clots will form on it. This could stop it from working.Patients will need to take blood thinning drugs every day for the rest of their lives. Even with the thinning drugs, thereis also the risk that a blood clot will form and then move to block a blood vessel, which could cause a stroke or heart attack.
What is a mechanical heart valve and why do pations need it?
Heart valves can become damaged. If this happens then the flow of blood through the heart is affected so they may have to be replaced. Mechanical heart valves are made from hard durable materials like titanium.
What wre biological heart valves usually made from?
Animal valves or other animal tissue that is strong and flexible, usually from pigs.
What is our ‘natural pacemaker’
It is a group of cells that control the beat of your hear by sendingnout small electric shocks. The cells are found in the right atrium of your heart that acts as your natural pacemaker.
What is an artificial pacemaker, what does it do, how does it work?
It’s an electrical device used to correct irregularities in the heart rate, which is implanted into your chest. They are attached to your heart by 2 wires and only weigh about 20 to 50g. It sends strong but regular electrical sygnals to your heart that stimulate it to beat properly.
In what case would someone need an artificial heart?
When a heart of a person has failed completely. It can also be used to give a diseased heart a rest so that it can recover.
What are some of the disadvantages of having an artificial heart?
Most of the time the patient will need to be in hospital under strict care. There is also a high risk of blood clotting as a result of the not fully developed technology which can lead to death. I think maybe people see others with artificial hearts as not human anymore making them against it. An artificial heart is unfortunately very expensive.
What are some of the advantages of having an artificial heart?
Obviously the patient can continue living their life much longer and be able to live until they can find a heart with a matching tissue providing them with the abilities to live a normal life again. It can also be used to give a diseased heart a rest so it can recover.
What is the liquid that builds up in arteries that causes CHD.
