Externalizing Problems
- Affect person’s external world.
* Behaviours that can disrupt or endanger self or others.
Internalizing Problems
- Affect person’s internal world.
* Often concealed, not always noticeable to others.
Problem Behaviours
Behaviours viewed by adults as problematic.
Risk Behaviours
Behaviours that involve risk of negative outcomes.
What are the two sources of externalizing problems?
Individual factors (e.g. gender, ethnicity, aggressiveness, impulse control).
Socialization sources (e.g. family structure, friends, school, media, legal system).
Delinquency
Crime committed by juveniles.
Juvenile
Legally younger than adult status.
Adolescence-Limited Delinquency
No signs of problems in infancy/childhood. Typically minor crimes. No signs of problems in adulthood. Occasional criminal activity between 12-25.
Life-Course-Persistent Delinquency
Early pattern of problems from birth. Raised in high-risk environment. Continued criminal activity in adulthood.
Depressed Mood
Enduring sadness. Most common (1/3 adolescents). Peaks in mid-adolescence.
Major Depressive Disorder
Psychological diagnosis. 4+ other symptoms. Less common (approx. 3 to 7% of adolescents).
