Problem Solving Flashcards
The Eight Fundamentals of Problem Solving
- Define the Real Problem
- Solve the Root Cause
- Use a Hypothesis
- Get the Facts
- Keep the solution simple
- Do not reinvent the wheel
- Gain momentum in problem solving
- Consider time
Six Steps to Problem Solve
- Define Problem
- Analyze Problem
- Identify All Possible Solution
- Select the Best One (Keeping time , cost, strength in mind)
- Plan Action (Steps to be taken in solving problem or in implementing solution)]
- Evaluate Solution
6 Ways to Enhance Your Problem Solving Skills Effectively
- Focus on the Solution, Not the Problem
- Adapt 5 Whys to Clearly Define the Problem
- Simplify Things
- List out as Many Solutions as Possible
- Think Laterally
- Use Language That Creates Possibility (phrases like ‘what if…’ and ‘imagine if…’)
Problem Solving Style
1.Idealist - The idealist takes a holistic view
2.Activist - The activist takes a diverse view
3.Realist - The realist takes a sensible view
Barriers to Common Problem Solving
Key Barriers are:
● Confirmation bias
● Mental set
● Functional fixedness
● Unnecessary constraints
● Irrelevant information
3 Common Biases That Impede Problem-Solving
1) Confirmation bias - This occurs when we favour information that confirms our existing beliefs.
2) Recency bias - This is when we place greater importance on information that we’ve recently acquired.
3) Framing bias - This concerns how we are influenced by the way information is presented, as opposed to the information itself. For example, a yoghurt could be labelled as 90% fat free or, alternatively, as containing 10% fat.
_______________ is an ability to collect, visualize, and analyze information to see the bigger picture or trend behind facts and help in finding solutions to common problems and make decisions in helping what to perform next
Analytical skills or analytical thinking
______________ is the ability to think clearly and
rationally, understanding the logical connection
between ideas. It includes the ability to engage in
reflective and independent thinking.
