Problem Behavior Flashcards
Define Target Behaviors
Behaviors that, once altered, will create a significant improvement in ones quality of life.
Function of Behavior
Reinforcer that explains why the behavior continues to occur in the natural environment.
What is Differential Reinforcement?
A treatment strategy in which a specific desired behavior is followed by a reinforcer (which increases the behavior) while other behaviors are not followed by a reinforcer (which decreases the behavior).
Differential Reinforcement of Other Behavior (DRO)
A procedure that involves delivering the reinforcer after an interval of time in which the problem behavior it does not occur. DRO involves reinforcing the absence of the problem behavior.
Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates of Responding (DRL)
A procedure that involves increasing the time between responses, which decreases the rate of the behavior. DRL is primarily used when the goal is to decrease but not all together eliminate the problem behavior.
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible Behaviors (DRI)
A procedure that involves delivering a reinforcer following an incompatible behavior. The behavior must be physically incompatible with the problem behavior. The problem behavior and the other behavior cannot occur simultaneously.
Differential Reinforcement of Alternative Behavior (DRA)
A procedure similar to DRI, but instead of reinforcing a behavior that is incompatible with the problem behavior, DRA involves reinforcing desirable alternatives, or replacement behavior.
What is Extinction?
The process by which the frequency of behavior is decreased by no longer presenting the reinforcing consequence following the behavior.
What is Guided Compliance?
An extinction procedure that is implemented when a client does not respond to an issued demand; it involves physically prompting the client to engage in the requested behavior.
4 Functions of Behavior
Escape, Attention, Access to Tangibles, and Sensory Stimulation
