The failure to form an attachment
What did Hodges and Tizard do?
Followed 65 British children. Children were placed in institution less than 4 months old. Policy against care takers forming attachments.
The early study of Hodges and Tizard
70% were decribed as not able to care deeply about anyone
What did Hodges and Tizard find?
The restored children where less likely to have formed attachments with their mothers.
The adopted children were as closely attached to their parents as a controlled group of normal children.
However both groups had trouble forming attachments with peers
Romanian Orphans

100 orphans assessed at 4, 6 and 11
Children adopted before 6 months showed normal emotional development
Adopted after 6 months showed disinhibited attachment and problems with peers
Reactive/ inhibited attachment disorder
shy and withdrawn, unable to cope with most social situations

Genie (locked up till 13 and a half could not stand properly or talk) and Czech Twins ( 7 years locked up by step mum, couldn’t talk)
Evaluation
We don’t know if Genie was retarded from birth or if she had formed and attachment with her mother.
The Czech Twins my have formed an important attachment with each other.
