A

-Transportation Act 1718
-Seen as alternative to death penalty
-Could be sentenced to 14 years transportation where sent to Northern America and take part in hard and forced labour

-Central Manchester -Victorian prison that had panopticon design -Conditions were bad and prison officers would use drugs to control prisoners -Wrote letters of complaints -25 days protest

What did HM Inspectorate of Prisons suggest about prison conditions?
-Publishes inspection reports -Evaluate in 4 areas; safety, respect, purposeful activity and rehabilitation/release planning

What is Prison and Probation Ombudsman (PPO)?
-Independent investigations into complaints and deaths in custody -Prisoners can make written complaints

What is a determinate sentence?
-Prison sentence below 4 yrs = prisoner released at 40% point, spend remaining term under community service (Probation) -Prison sentence above 4 yrs = automatic release doesn't apply and need to apply for Parole

What is an indeterminate sentence?
-IPPs (over 18) and DPPs (under 18) -Can apply for parole after minimum term served -Supervised indefinitely -Can apply for supervision to be suspended after 10 years

What is an extended sentence?
-LASPO (2012) abolished IPP's and DPP's -Given to ones guilty of specific violent/sexual acts, significant risk to public as well as those where imprisonment for life isn't available -Spend remaining time of sentence and 5 yrs extended license under community supervision

Describe the Parole Board
-Independent body decides if prisoners can be released from prison; -Serving 4+ years imprisonment -Given IPP/DPP sentences before 2012 -Given extended sentences -Serving life imprisonment with tariff

What is Resettlement day release (RDR license)
-Able to do community work -Gain life skills and training -Maintain family ties -The duration of this shouldn't be more than 2 weeks

What is resettlement overnight release (ROR)?
-Allow prisoners to spend time at release address or approved hostel address -Helps to re-establish connection with family and community -Duration shouldn't exceed more than 4 nights

-Oct 2023 = 88,225 people, only had 557 spaces left to spare -MoJ said it could reach 94,400 by March 2025
