A

The idea that prison life is not completely removed from the real world as they all have their experiences and beliefs from the real world when the go in there. Their willingness to be violent reflects their lives before they were imprisoned.

Research into the important model

A

Matt de lisi (2011)
813 prisoners from Cali.
These prisoners had experience of childhood trauma, high levels of anger and irritability, a history of substance abuse, and violent behaviour.
Findings- the inmates were more likely to engage in suicidal behaviour and sexual misconduct compared to the control group with fewer Dispositional factor.

The deprivation model

A

Donald clemmer (1958) places the causes of institutional aggression on situational factors from within the prison environment. E.g. Harsh conditions, stress, etc.

Research into the deprivation model

A
Benjamin Steiner (2009) investigated the factors that predict inmate aggression in 512 prisons in the US. 
findings- he found that inmate on inmate violent was more common in prisons where there was more female-staff, African american inmates, Hispanic inmates, and inmates in productive custody for their own safety. In the study the factors reliably predicted aggressive behaviour in line with the deprivation model.
