Evolutionary Explanations Of Human Agression. Flashcards
Main evolutionary explanation of aggression.
Sexual jealousy
-caused by CUCKOLDRY (when the father doesn’t know if he’s the father) as if he’s raising someone else’s baby then it’s a waste of his resources
Mate retention strategies
Direct guarding- checking who their partner has been and who she’s been seeing keeping tabs on her.
Negative inducements- issuing threats to try make them stay with him.
Dell 1984)
Found that 17% of all cases of murder are down to sexual jealousy
Explanation of bullying
Bullying occurs because of a power imbalance, as more powerful people individuals use aggression against a weaker person.
Also it’s used to show that you’re healthy and to create opportunity for reproduction.
Tony volk et al (2012) suggested it’s to attract the opposite sex, as it suggests dominance, and has the benefit of warding off potential threats.
Evaluation- cultural differences
!Kung San
-Strongly disapprove aggression
-Different to Yaomamo who encourage it
So- different culture have evolved differently
Outline- mate retention strategies
Direct guarding- constant checking up on a partner
Negative inducements- threats if they leave
Evaluation- Cultural differences
!Kung San of the kalahari
- very negative views on aggression and never act aggressively
So- different culture = different evolution
