Printing Styles Flashcards
What is direct printing?
-when dyes or pigments are printed directly onto fabrics
What is discharge printing?
- printing using a reduction process onto a solid coloured fabric
- the discharge paste destroys the colour where it is printed
what are the two types of discharge?
- white
- illuminated
What is Devore?
3
- printing using a chemical which destroys specific fibres, only printed onto fabric of paired mixed fibres
- alkali destroys protein fibre
- acid destroys cellulose
Name two examples of mixed fibre fabrics appropriate for Devore.
- polyester/cotton
- wool/cotton
How does Devore react on a silk/viscose velvet?
-destroys the pile and leaves the ground unharmed, causing a burn-out look
What is resist printing?
- a resist paste is printed onto fabric before dyeing
- dye effects only the areas not covered by the paste
- paste removed, leaving a pattern
What are the two types of resist processes?
- mechanical
- chemical
What is mechanical resist? Name 2 examples.
- printed to form a barrier between fabric and dye, repelling the dye
- wax, fats
What are chemical resists?
-printed first on fabric to prevent fixation of dye/ development of ground colour by chemically reacting with either the dye or reagents used for fixation
