Principles of Training Flashcards
Learning is…?
change in potential to perform a behaviour as a result of experience
To train and coach effectively you must…?
set high yet realistic expectations give feedback & clear instructions closely supervise performance set meangingful tasks resulting in high success rates clear presentation, enthusiasm & warmth
List things to consider when planning a training program
Strengths/wekanesses of you & the horse injury/health status of horse what support expertise do you have/is available to you facilities time requirements of sport
What is training overload?
subjecting the body to training loads beyond those normally accustomed to =>body reorganises to cope w/ demand
Training stress should be cyclic
Discuss recovery time in relation to training
Cyclic, alternate sessions (hard, medium, easy)
e.g. heavy training 2-3 weeks followed by 1 week light work, 1 or 2 easy days in 7 day cycle
Also think in terms of diet, recovery from excersise itself -stretching at end of session, sweating -increase electrolytes etc
What do we mean about training reversibility? specifity?
reversibility -“use it or lose it”
specifity -reproduce movements & use energy systems used in particular sport
What is flooding?
over-exposure to causative stimuli until response disappears
what is desensitisation?
step-by-step process of weakening an unwelcome fear response by gradual introduction of increasing amount of problematic stimuli
What is counter-conditioning?
exposure to pleasent coincidental stimuli at the same time as unpleasant stimuli (e.g. being fed whilst being injected)
What is the benefit of cross training?
Multi-event sports
Can be used to reduce strain on muscles/joints
Make sure you read over lecture slides -preparation periods!
