Principles of Training Flashcards
Definitions of the PoT
Reversibility
Systems reverse when training stops or slows due to injury. It is essential to avoid breaks in training to maintain the motivation of the athlete.
What is Individual Needs?
The training must related to the athletes age, gender, their injury status and fitness level and sport.
What is Specificity?
Training must be relevant to the individual and their sport. This can be achieved by tailoring training to be specifically for the sport or even the position that the individual plays.
What is Progressive Overload?
Gradually increasing the amount of overload so that the fitness gains occur, without the potential for injury.
What is Tedium?
Variance in training to keep the athlete motivated e.g. varying kick distance in rugby.
What is Frequency?
The number of times an athlete trains each week.
What is Intensity?
Increasing the training i.e. increasing a greater resistance or by training at a higher percentage of maximum heart rate.
What is Time?
Training for longer increases results and keeps athlete motivated.
