Principles of Neuroplasticity Flashcards
What is neuroplasticity?
the adaptivity capacity of the human brain
(the brain’s ability to learn and adapt)
Use it or lose it
failure to use certain functions can lead to loss
Use it to Improve it
Training of certain brain functions can lead to improvement
Repetition matters
for the brain to adapt (neuroplasticity), the brain requires repetition
Intensity matters
for the brain to adapt (neuroplasticity), the brain requires intense training
Time matters
After injury the brain is more plastic (adaptable) at some times and less plastic at others.
Salience Matters
The training must be meaningful to induce plasticity
Age matters
Training-induced plasticity occurs more readily in younger people
Transference matters
plasticity in response to one training experience can enhance other behaviors (generalization)
Interference
Plasiticy can interfere with other behaviors
