Principles of Life Flashcards
What is the Hierarchy of Life
(atoms→ biosphere;)
atom,(molecule, macromolecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system,) organisms, population, community, ecosystem, biome, and biosphere.
Characteristics of Life:
G.R.A.C.E
G - growth and developement
R - reproduction
A - adaptation and responce
C - made of cells
E - energy
growth
an increase in size
developement
change or appearance of a new feature
reproduce
produce new organisms and pass on their genetic traits
adapt
over long periods of time, groups of organisms do this in response to their environment, which is known as evolution
respond
to their surroundings to get back to their “normal state” - known as homeostasis
cells
- living things have to be made of these basic units
- smallest living unit in an organism
prokarytic cells
cells that don’t contain a nucleus nor membrace bound organelles (ex. mitocondria)
eukaryotic cells
THEY HAVE A NUCLEUS
organisms obtain and use materials (food and energy) to grow, develop, and reproduce. The chemical reactions that enable living things to get energy are called metabolism.
