- Growth rates are not constant
- Different parts of the body grow at different rates
- Growth rates vary between children
- Boys tend to grow quicker than girls. This is why men tend to be taller than women.

- In the first 2 years it is done by length when lying down
- From 2 it is measured by height while standing.

Head dimensions
A
The circumference of the head is measured at birth and at 6-8 weeks to make sure that there aren’t any brain or skull abnormalities.
-Skull growth is fastest in the first 2 years but continues into early adulthood

- Growth is an indicator of children’s health and well-being
- It is plotted on a growth chart and measured against centile lines that show the norms of development for a child that age.
- they show length/height and weight/head dimensions of a child that age
- It is important to compare this as it can help indicate any problems with the health and well-being of the child
- they are different for boys and girls as their growth rates are expected to vary.
