Chomsky Lad Flashcards
What is Chomsky’s theory?
Chomsky’s theory is on language development and it involves LAD
What is language development?
Communication through articulation (speech) and receptive speech (understanding)
What are the stages of language development?
There are 3 main stages and they are:
- infancy (birth-18 months)
- early childhood (2-8 years)
- adolescence (9-19 years)
What develops at 0-3months?
- mouth movements in response to a parent
- cries for food or comfort
What develops in Infancy 6-12 months
- understabds some words e.g ‘byebye’
- makes simple sounds like ‘gaga’
Ehat develops in Infancy 18months
- can say 6-10 words
- can follow simple instructions
What develops in Early childhood 2-3years
- links words together e.g. ‘me car’
- by 21/2 years they know about 200 words
What develops in Early childhood 3-5 years
- can use simple sentences
- asks questions
- may use incorrect forms of words e.g. ‘i good’
What develops in Early childhood 8 years
- speaks in complex sentences
- cab reason and explain
What develops in Adolescence 9-18 years
- develop get vocabulary
- uses language to explore abstract ideas
What did Chomsky suggest with LAD?
He suggested:
- humans are born with something in the brain that helps acquire language
- the first years of life are a critical period for language development
- everyone follows the same pattern for language development
- we have an innate understanding of language structure, this is the basis for all languages
What are the 4 criticisms of Chomsky?
- it lacks scientific evidence for the innate understanding of the structure of language
- the rate of language development is developed by the degree of interactions they have with others
- it fails to account that a language acquisition support system is required
- chomsky places emphasis on grammar in sentence development rather than meaning
