Principles of effective data display Flashcards
1
Q
What are the 5 key ways to effectively display data?
A
- Show the data and produce patterns
- Represent magnitudes accurately
- Draw graphs clearly, keep clutter at a minimum
- Make displays easy to interpret
- Clearly ID all the axes
2
Q
What are 3 ways to mislead with graphs?
A
- Not starting scale at 0
- Different axis scales between graphs to compare
- Colours
3
Q
Why wouldn’t we normally display raw data in a paper?
A
A lot of numbers that don’t mean anything. If it was in a paper it would be in an appendix for reference
4
Q
What are 3 things you can do to effectively communicate results through a table?
A
- Compact
- Few digits as possible
- Arrange the numbers to facilitate patterns
5
Q
What advantage do graphs have over tables?
A
Better for showing patterns and outliers
6
Q
What advantage do tables have over graphs?
A
Better for communicating quantitative detail
7
Q
Should you use a graph or a table?
A
Best to use both, but complementary and not repeating each other
