Frequency and probability distributions, types of studies Flashcards
What is frequency?
The number of observations with a particular measurement
What is a frequency distribution?
A distribution of how often each variable occurs in a sample
Can we actually construct a frequency distribution?
Yes. It’s based on observations
What is a probability distribution?
The distribution of a variable in the whole population
Can we actually construct a probability distribution?
They’re just theoretical, probable. Several types to choose from
What’s the relation between frequency and probability distribtions?
We compare frequency dists to prob dists to derive P-values
What are two types of studies?
Experimental and observational
What is an experimental study? What types of inferences can you draw from them?
Study where the researcher randomly assigns treatments to groups. Can draw cause and effect
What is an observational study? What types of inferences can you draw from them?
Study where there’s no assignment of treatments made by the researcher. Can only look for associations but not causation
What is relative frequency? How do you calculate it?
The proportion of observations with a given measurement. Calculated by dividing the frequency by the total number of observations
What is a relative frequency distribution?
The proportion of how often a value occurs in a data set
