Displaying categorical and numerical data Flashcards
How do you graph a categorical variable?
Bar graphs
What are two critical features of bar graphs?
- The Y-axis always starts at 0
2. There are gaps between the bars
How do you graph a numerical variable?
Histograms or cumulative frequency diagrams
What features do histograms have?
- Start at 0
- No spaces between the bars
- A value at a boundary goes into the next highest category
- Space on either side to look prettier
- States total sample size
What are the 4 patterns seen in histograms?
- Uniform
- Normal
- Asymmetric
- Bimodal
What is the interval width?
The width of the bands in histograms
What is a percentile?
The percentage of observations less than or equal to a measurement. The remaining observations exceed that measurement
What is a quartile?
Specific percentiles at 25%, 50%, 75%
What is a quantile?
A cut-point that divides the range of a prob distribution
What is a cumulative frequency diagram?
Is a graph that shows all quantities of a numerical value along an axis of percentiles
What advantage do histograms have over cumulative frequency diagrams?
Show outliers better
What advantage do cumulative frequency diagrams have over histograms?
Can sometimes show the overall spread of the data better
