Principles of Design Flashcards
principles of design
balance rhythm negative space depth visual hierarchy emphasis unity
balance
altered by the arrangement of other objects on the page
symmetry, asymmetry
rythm
can be create through similarity or repetition of elements
depth
time can be used as a depth element, also created through size and placement,, value, overlapping etc
emphasis
though we want everything to work together, sometimes it’s good to create a focal point, it’s isolated, it’s bigget, it’s different, bigger, coloured etc
unity:
correspondence continuity grids alignment similarity flow
correspondence
communicating. we want all the different elements to be talking to each other, similarity (texture, line etc) so that they all look like they go together. looking at all the elements on the page and seeing if they are working well together
continuity
the differnt elements are all working together in some way (has to do with correspondence
grids
we can create unity using grids
when there is a lot of information, grids can make it managable
aligning
making sure to align things in a meaningful way has a lot to do with positive and negative space
similarity
creating similarity using similar elements
flow
if we have good balance, continuity etc, we end up with good flow. we want our viewers eyes to move around the page in the way we want them too. the result of all the other things that come form unity. you can also have good ‘flow’ even if there isn’t ‘good flow.
