1st PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
- Each client must be accepted as an individual and dealt with as such
- The counselor does not necessarily approve of all behavior, but still accepts the client as a person
- We don’t demoralize the client.
2ND PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
Counseling is a permissive relationship:
That is, the individual has permission to say what they please without being reprimanded or judged.
3rd PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
- Counseling emphasizes thinking with; not for the individual.
- We don’t make decisions for our clients.
- We do not pressure clients on their decisions.
- We only give them enlightenment.
4TH PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
All decision-making rests with the client.
5TH PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
Counseling is centered on the difficulties of the client.
6TH PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
Counseling is a learning situation which eventually results in a behavioral change.
7TH PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
Effectiveness in counseling depends largely on the readiness of the client to make changes and the therapeutic relationship with the counselor.
8TH PRINCIPLE OF COUNSELING
The counseling relationship is confidential.
