Principals Of Design Flashcards
Define Balance and explain the two types
The arrangement of elements to create the impression of equality of weight or harmony of design proportion. The two types are symmetrical and Asymmetrical.
Emphasis
Emphasis is attention given to one part or element in artwork. Can be achieved through placement, contrast, colour size and repetition.
Contrast
The juxtaposition of different elements of design. (Ex. Complimentary colours, textures rough and smooth) in order to highlight their differences or create balance, visual interest or focal point
Variety
The quality of being diverse or incorporate a number of different contrasting elements. Variety may be achieved by opposing, changing, elaborating or contrasting the elements of design
Movement
The way in which elements of design are organized that the viewers eye is led thought out the art, often the focal area. Movement can be directed along lines and edges, by means of shape and colour.
Define rhythm and repetition and the five types
Use of recurring elements to direct the movement of the viewers eye through the artwork and give a sense of unity, pattern or dominance of one visual idea to the composition. Repeated Patterson of brush strokes can also lead the eye through the art. The five types are, random, regular, alternating, progressing and flowing.
Unity and harmony
The arrangement of elements to give the viewer a feeling of all the parts form a coherent whole. The combination of elements that highlight their similarities and produce a unified composition.
