Name the 7 ways to create depth
Overlap- shapes that are partially hidden behind other shapes seem further away
Relative size- larger shapes seem closer
Height in plane- objects that are places closer to the top of the picture seem further away
Detail- objects with more detail seem closer
Gradient of texture- texture appears less concentrated when near
Linear perspective- Lines which in reality are parallel appear to converge, and they move back into space
Aerial perspective- colours appear to change over distance they are pure and bright close up but become duller, greyer and washed out with distance
Define underpainting
Light washes of acrylic paint that are subsequently overlaid with another layer or with a finishing coat
Define sponge painting
Sponge painting is a quick and easy way to add texture to your painted surface. Start by painting the area with a flat color, then you can use a sponge to add layers of various colours on top
Define Drybrush
Drybrush is a painting technique in which a paintbrush is relatively dry but still holds paint. The resulting of brush strokes have characteristic scratchy look that lacks a smooth the appearance that washes or blended paint commonly have

Applying wet paint two previous layer of paint that is still wet
Define pointillism
A technique of non-impressionist painting using tiny dots, placed close together various pure colors, which become blended in the viewers eye
Define colour blending
Blending is a technique of painting colours so that there is a gentle and gradual transition from one to the other
Define Colour dabbing
Applying paint in short brushstrokes leaving the brushstrokes visible. The paint can be applied in large amounts to create a raised texture

Sgraffito is taking a metal tool and adding impressions on the paper so that when a solid wash is added the impression is left uncoloured

Combined and advanced techniques and scale of the renaissance with emotion intensity and drama. Most ornate period of art and history. Expanded the role of art into every day life. Sensitivity and mastery of light to achieve maximum emotional impact. Began in Rome then spread to France
Define neoclassicism
The era of neoclassicism was 1780-1820. Clear reaction against ornate style. Order, calm, rational. Greek and Roman history mythology. No trace of brushstrokes. Morley uplifting and inspirational. Founded by Jacques – Louis David. Precisely drawn figures, smooth brushstroke, simple composition. Backgrounds generally include Roman arches or columns andsymmetry and straight lines replaced irregular curves
Defined romanticism
Era 1800-1850. Age of sensibility. Values – intuition emotion imagination. Inspiration – medieval and Baroque eras, middle and Far East. Colour – restrained, spontaneous, non-conformist. Subjects – legends, nature, violence. Narratives of heroic struggle, landscape. Technique – quick brushstrokes strong light and shade contrast. Diagonal composition.
Define social realism
Before social realism, artist modified their subjects by idealizing or sensationalizing them. The new realism insisted on personalize imitation of visual perceptions without alteration.
