What are the primitive reflexes?
- Sucking and rooting
- Grasp
- Moro
- Galant

- Asymmetric tonic neck reflex

What is the sucking reflex?
Coordinated suck and swallow
When does the sucking reflex develop?
32-36 weeks gestation
What is the result of the sucking reflex not developing until around 32 weeks gestation?
Premature babies may be born before the reflex is sufficiently developed and require time and practice to attain the skill
What is the rooting reflex?
Stimulation of a corner of the mouth/cheek prompts the baby to turn towards the source and open the mouth
When does the rooting reflex develp?
32-36 weeks gestation
By what age should the sucking and rooting reflexes disappear?
4 months
What is the grasp reflex?
Fist clenches when palm stimulated
By what age should the grasp reflex disappear?
5-6 months
What is the moro reflex?
Throws head back, extends then contracts limbs and clenches fists
By what age should the Moro reflex disappear?
5-6 months
What is the Galant reflex?
Stroking to the side of the spine causes the body to curve towards the stimulus
By what age should the Galant reflex disappear?
4-6 months
What is the walking reflex?
Supporting the infant upright with the soles touching a surface causes each foot in turn to be lifted, as if walking
When should the walking reflex disappear?
2 months
