Patterns Of Development ✅ Flashcards
What are the different patterns of development?
- Normal
- Developmental delay
- Plateau
- Reaction to acute severe brain injury
- Deviated but normal
- Leapfrog
- Regression
What is normal development defined as?
The pattern of development of 90% of children at a specific age
Does delayed development affect all or just some of the domains?
Can just affect one, more than one, or all domains
What is meant by plateauing development?
Where a previously developing child does not progress any further, or where there are physical barriers to further progress
Give an example of when a child might not progress any further in their development?
After a brain injury
Give an example of where there may be a barrier to further progress in development?
A child with quadriplegic CP may be able to independently manoeuvre across the floor, but can’t walk without assistance
What is the main example of deviated but normal development?
Bottom shuffler
What does the bottom shuffle often replace?
The crawling stage
What % of bottom shufflers will be walking independently by 27 months of age?
97.5%
What is true of some children that bottom shuffle?
May be due to underlying problem such as hypotonicity, muscle weakness, or structural malformation
What is meant by leapfrog development?
Entire stages of development are missed out completely
Give an example of leapfrog development?
Child does straight from sitting to walking, with no crawling or other stages inbetween
What is meant by regression in development?
A child who was previously achieving a skill loses the ability
What is the clinical significance of developmental regression?
It is a serious indicator of pathology, and is a ‘red flag’ at any age
What is delay that is found in 2 or more domains sometimes called?
Global developmental delay
